December ushers in all kinds of activity ranging from Decking the Halls with Boughs of Holly to looking for the Joy in the World.  According to ReligiousTolerance.org, from November 1 to January 15 there are 29 holidays celebrated by 7 major religions.  During this month we ride the emotional slide experiencing anticipation, excitement, satisfaction, weakness, depression, exhaustion and back to excitement.
How do we keep it all together?  By remembering the reason for the season.  I know this sounds like a cliché, but it is filled with a lot of truth.  Here are some tips:

Find the Joy.  To find the Joy in your life try rediscovering laughter.  Find something that makes you laugh.  Watch old movies, read jokes, or just for no reason start laughing.  Focus on the many joys and blessings that are woven in the fabric of your life.  After all, it is a blessing to be alive to experience the December emotional rollercoaster.   Find the joy in family interactions, one day these will become memories.  Joy cannot be purchased in a store; it lives in your heart and the heart of others.  Start to connect with others heart –to- heart.
Look for the good in any negative experienceWhen you find yourself in the midst of a negative experience and having negative emotions, switch your focus to what is right in your life and this experience instead of what is wrong.  You will discover that you have a lot for which to be grateful.  This more you spend thinking about the good in your life, the less time you will have to spend ruminating.

Make a small change in your routine.  Making small changes in your life will create small successes.  Try keeping a journal, walking around the block, watching the sunset.  Small changes will open your mind to the beautiful things that surround you which have gone unnoticed.
Channel Your Inner Mother Teresa.  Volunteer your time or money to others who have a true need.  Give beyond serving meals at soup kitchens for the holidays only.  Commit to working on a regular basis with soup kitchens.  Try donating to a holiday clothing drive, helping a local food pantry create a website, provide bookkeeping help, and possibly help with other marketing drives.  Remember, they need your skills also.
As you channel your inner Mother Teresa, research has proven that your health will improve, experience relief from chronic pain, lower your blood pressure, and possibly find your purpose.

Here's to living in a constant state of joy and good cheer.
Dream Big!  Life the life you have imagined,
Remember, life is too short to drink cheap champagne.
